offering hope

So many people hurrying

scurrying

rushing off to do what it is

that needs be done

so many

running with this child

this friend

this parent

hurrying, to take care

of the errands that need be done

shopping and work, dance and ball games

taking the time

of so many

rushing

not seeing as we go

who we pass

so many

that are in need of something

feeling abandoned

left alone so alone

cold and empty

they hunger, for more than food

even as their belly rumbles empty

thirsty, for more than physical drink

even as their tongue lies in a dry parched mouth

they huddle in the corners

a box, a car, a park bench their bed

shelters filled with the crying, the lonely

those that hunger for more

lost they stand staring

remembering

once upon a time

as they watch,

so many

rushing, hurrying, passing them by

sick of body, sick of mind

they watch

weary of the battle

even as their back still strong

their mind still sharp

no jobs, there are no jobs

they struggle as they search

they sit on the bench

in a library warm

standing in line of employment offices

temporary services

holding the want ads listing

no jobs

as they watch, thru tear stained

weary eyes

so many

passing, hurrying, rushing by

those that work yet

trying to appease

trying to do their job

as they can

meeting one irate, unhappy, not satisfied

they work and they try

suffering at the hands of the many

that go rushing, hurrying, passing by

not seeing the carnage they leave

in the crushed spirit

of the one that tries

elderly they walk slow

using walker or cane

they shuffle on

trying

to do the things once so easy

trying

to lift or to reach or to carry

as they shuffle along

pushed and cursed by the young and strong

they hear, and they ignore

while in their hearts they cry

remembering the time

watching as the young and the strong

pass them by

rushing, hurrying away

one that is struggling to carry

one item too many

one item too heavy

juggling, dropping, wondering

how to manage to retrieve the one

and not lose the many

how to open a door not automated

struggling as the many pass them by

laughing and jostling

just to see, will they drop one more?

as they wonder still, struggling

as they watch through tired, frustrated eyes

the many that go

rushing, hurrying, scurrying by

without concern, without care

so many

there are so many

that need just a moment

that random, unplanned act

a kind word, a gentle smile

a recognition

that they were once

they are now

and forever will be important

one act, of kindness

an opened door, an item retrieved

recognition that they are

worthy

so many

hurrying, rushing, scurrying by

slowing, for just a moment

taking the time

and in a moment of compassion

offering hope.
