my heart sings Hallelujah

How my heart sings

Hallelujah

You are Lord

Your love washes over me

fills me with joy

I know, how I know

that all things You control

You know

all fears, all needs

You know

the storms that come

You see the darkening clouds

on the near horizon

see the winds as they strengthen

the rains, as they build and fall

My heart sings to You

Hallelujah

You are King

You command the rains

still the winds

as You draw us close to You

You are our Sanctuary

My heart sings

for You see the weariness

that comes from the struggles

from the walk of this life

fighting the temptations

that lurk on all sides

You reach out, Your light shines

drawing us to You

Shepherd of Your flock

You guide the way

You are the way

Hallelujah

my heart sings

You are Lord

You have paid the price

for our sins

paid the cost

to make us free

Your blood flows over us

cleansing us of transgressions

How my heart sings

Hallelujah

Praise You Lord

in all things

Blessed in His Promises

Thoughts, warnings and disappointments in that Sunbeam space heater

. Everyone who knows me, knows that I am a cold natured person. Once the temperature drops below seventy degrees I'm looking for long sleeves and heaters. We heat the house with wood. Unfortunately, the heat from that wood stove does not always flow well through the entire house. Especially to this room full of windows. When I am in this room I have a space heater that I use to keep warm. For years I have used a small electric heater that had belonged to my grandmother. How long she owned it before I got it I do not know, but I've owned it for nearly twenty years.

My son has watched me use that heater, has watched the cats as they stretch out in front of that same heater and laughed. He very rarely gets cold but has given up on making comments on how I do. (Even his dad has about quit making comments) He helps keep wood split and in the house or at least within reach. Recently he went one step farther, he and his dad gave me a new spacer heater for a Christmas gift.

An upright Sunbeam that has two settings. This thing is warm, warm enough that several times I have reached over and not just turned it down, but off. The cats grew accustomed to the new heater and found their places in front of it, defending them fervently. It was rare that I had to wrap up in any sort of blanket. The old space heater found its way into storage.

However-- it is important to remember these things are dangerous. It was rare that I would leave the room and leave it on. I made sure that the cats didn't manage to drag or push anything combustable close to it. It was not attached to a drop cord. Wanting to be warm, did not cause me to be stupid or careless.

Today, I was sitting here alternating between writing and watching old westerns on television. Suddenly I began to hear odd popping and crackling sounds. Turning to look I saw an odd light flickering in the heater along with the noise. Jumping up I turned off the heater, and unplugged it even quicker. It was already smoking. James - my son- came into the room about that time. He looked at me oddly, asking about the smell, when I explained to him what had happened he leaned over to examine the heater. Looking back at me he went and got the old heater and brought it back in here.

The purpose for all this- a reminder and a question. The reminder is that space heaters of any type or brand are dangerous. Never leave them alone. Do not use extension cords when ever possible. Make sure at all times there is nothing near the heater that can combust. Do not place the smaller ones where they can fall, heaters of any size that can be tipped over. Do not use near water. Think carefully, use common sense in the use of space heaters.

My question, why. Why would a space heater that is less than a month old short out? I'm back to using a twenty something year old heater. Why can we not build, manufacture things today like we did once upon a time? Why can we not build things to last? Have we become such that we build to break? Are all things temporary so that we the consumer will have to return time and again to purchase replacements? What has happened to consumer confidence? Has it gone the way of the wind and heaters that last no more than a month?

.

Snow Day-- Conclusion

After I had managed to answer the last phone call I grabbed my camera, hat and gloves and headed out the door. Grabbing up my walking stick I headed for the woods.

It was of course cold outside, it was still sleeting a little as I walked. I listened to the sound of the snow crunching under foot. Tasted the ice on my tongue as I walked. I do not like driving in ice and snow, but I do love walking in it. Seeing the changes it makes in the landscape as it falls. There is a special magic in snow. I've often said --as I'm sure others do-- that snow brings out the kid in us. But it brings about more. It brings a feeling of awe to the heart. How something so simple, can make such a difference. How snow falling can bring about on one side this feeling of dread, but on the other a feeling of giddiness and fun.

I walked down the hill, searching the landscape around me for signs of life. I walked, feeling the sleet striking my face. Entering the fence around the pond I gazed at the pond's frozen surface. I knew there was no way it was solid, it hadn't been that cold for that long. But there were some interesting patterns in the ice. Walking around the pond I watched as my booted feet sank down into the snow. Without trees to divert the snow or block its falling it was deeper. Crossing the bridge I carefully made my way around the pond, photographing things as I walked. I didn't tarry long, it was getting late and I had a fairly long walk ahead of me.

Making my way to the path I detoured over to the small creek that makes its way through the woods. It had cut a path through the snow, leaving a dark area marking its path. A couple of photos later I was back on the path and headed for the small field ahead of me. By now, snow was falling once again. I stopped in the center of the field and watched the snow fall, feeling it brush against my cheek as it fell. Melting on warm skin. Knowing time was short I didn't stand too long. I crossed the path and began to climb the hill. This part of my journey I was careful, I didn't want to be part way up the hill only to misstep and slide back down. At the half way point something caught my eye, a young tree barely above the snow. Taking a few photos, I finished climbing the hill and took my usual left.

Snow was falling more heavily as I walked. I veered off my path only once more, walking to see if I could spot a deer somewhere below along the creek. Seeing nothing but more snow I returned to the path and made my way on. Feeling the magic growing inside. Part of me wanted to play, part of me wanted to photograph everything, part of me was getting cold.

When I made it to the Dirt Road I started back for the house. The phone I carried had already rang several times with my husband calling me, wanting to make sure I was okay in my walk. Calling me again I told him I'd call him as soon as I got back to the house, it was getting dark, and it was getting colder. I noticed birds seeking water and food, attempting to draw close enough to photograph them I managed to get one before they disappeared into the woods.

The Dirt Road is special to me. For many it is just another dirt lane, graveled in a spot here or there, that leads to nowhere. Narrow it dead ends in the woods on the back side of the large power line that crosses it. Characteristics that cause me to like it that much more. Here I have found childhood adventure on bike and on foot. Here I have found healing from heartache and sickness. Here I find my quiet times when I walk. Here in the place, whether it is as now covered in snow, the greens of summer or the burst of colors in Autumn, I find beauty and peace. Listening to my footsteps and the sound of sleet falling I smiled even as I trembled in the growing awareness of just how cold it was getting. My thin gloves were not much help any more.

By now my flash had gone past warning me that the batteries were weak, it had totally given up. I was shooting with just the camera. I could hear the shutter as it worked, knowing that at times it was too slow to have gotten a good clear shot. Still I tried time and again as I walked, hoping for a few good ones.

When I finally entered the house I stepped into the kitchen to remove my ice covered boots. Slipping on my sneakers I set the camera down and walked over to make myself a cup of coffee. Looking out the window I watched in the fading light as my dogs played in the snow. I won't be building any snow people or forts. I have no plans for sledding or snowball fights. I have my photos, and unless we get a lot of ice from the drizzle that is falling outside I won't be taking many if any more photos of the snow. Where I work is closed on Tuesday, opening late on Wednesday, something that is pretty much unheard of where I work. But I'm glad, it isn't safe out there right now. Hot chocolate and brownies sounds a lot more fun than sliding around on an ice covered highway.

Its only January, there is plenty more of winter left. I imagine that there will be more snow days. I hope to get some photos from other areas around here but I won't risk my or other people's safety to get them. Who knows, I might even build that snow person or have that snowball fight then--

Blessed in His Promises

Snow day- part one

I had been listening to the weather predictions. They said it was coming. They warned us, it is coming. Be ready. So I made my preparations. I filled the gas tank on my vehicle, I bought batteries and I loaded the front porch with firewood. I had already made my way to the store and purchased the obligatory bread, milk and junk foods. I checked over my lists and checked over the house, and pet's houses. My son filled them yet again with cedar shavings and dry leaves. I filled containers with water- just in case. If the power went I wanted water for coffee.

Sunday night I went to bed earlier than I usually do. My anticipation- and dread- of the coming day wearing me out. I had watched as the weather prognosticators had showed where the storm was, where it was approaching and how fast. I was still hoping to get to work before it arrived. No such luck.

When I got up Monday morning- the ground was already white and it was snowing heavily. So, did I go, or not? My thoughts bounced back and forth like a ping pong ball at a championship match. I need to work, but I don't want to get hurt should I slide off the side of a mountain somewhere. I need to work, but I don't want to risk lives- mine or others. I need to work, but I..back and forth. Then the calls began, I had people call me which meant I had to call people. Well, one person who had already talked to the same people that were calling me. She told me that she would make some calls and get back to me. Hope was, the plant was not running. Hope was dashed when we were informed that yes, the plant was most definitely running. So now I was back to do I go, or not. I went.

As I had fluctuated between going and not- I had prepared my day's supply of snacks and lunch. My coffee was ready, my boots and outer wear waited. Part of me desired more than anything to stay home. Part of me feared going out. Part of me looked at the bills to be paid and that part won out. Late as it was, I could still make it to work on time. Getting my boots on I began to carry stuff to the car. Opening the door several inches of snow that has accumulated on top of the vehicle came flowing down like a mini-avalanche. Brushing it off the seat I got in and started the car. I had put plastic over the windshield, but in haste had not anchored it down, so the snow had pushed it down. Cleaning the windows I made ready to go. Reaching the top of the Dirt Road I had a choice to make, do I go the long way around? Or do I be more daring and go around the mountain? Because of the time, and some little voice inside my head I went the way that would take me around the mountain.

I pulled out onto the road and began to travel its snow covered expanse toward work, at the grand speed of fifteen miles an hour. The still early hour of not quite 5:30 and the falling snow had very few cars on the road. My first fear was approaching, I slowed down even more. Even in a four wheel drive vehicle I was taking no chances. I did not want to end off down in the river. All the nightmare possibilities swarmed inside my head. I did not wish to be trapped in a sinking car and yet I don't know how to swim..so I eased my way down. At the bottom of the hill a truck was up against the guardrail with his hazard lights flashing. The vehicle was off the road, and I didn't see a driver so I moved on. I crossed the bridges and made my way around a long sweeping curve. In the process I met a truck coming the other way, with plenty of room on either side we kept going. Then, I met my first difficulty. A co-worker in trouble.

This particular co-worker lives not far from me. He drives a small pick up truck. He had tried to make the turn to go up the next hill and hadn't made it, and now he was going nowhere fast. I parked in the middle of the road and walked over to his truck. Don't ask me why I thought I could do this next thing- I got behind and tried to push thinking if I could help him get to a spot where he could catch traction--of course it didn't work. He tried to move to turn around and go back. I moved my vehicle past him out of the way, watching him carefully. No matter what he tried, he wasn't going anywhere. At one point I got past him and moved to where I could park off the roadway as other traffic was by this time making an occasional appearance. I parked and walked back, as I made my way I watched as the vehicle that had stopped on the road coming down the hill, the one we wanted on, suddenly blue lights sprang to life. Blue lights reflecting off of falling snow has an interesting and really rather pretty effect. The officer told him that he might as well park the truck where he was because he wasn't going to get anywhere right then. He was actually being very polite, I'm sure he had been sitting in his SUV shaking his head at my co-worker's attempts. I spoke with the officer while my co-worker got his belongings and locked the truck. The officer went on to his waiting assignment while we walked back to my own vehicle. Turning around I made my way up the hill.

Going around the mountain wasn't really bad as we only met one vehicle going the other way and it was at a place that was wide enough that there was no worries. It was when we got around the mountain and coming into the small town that I groaned aloud. The road looked like a skating rink. Already going slow I eased up on the gas and tried to keep a steady speed. All I wanted was to get to work. Seeing the plant come into sight was calming. Getting into the parking area and stopped was even more so. Together my co-worker and I spread the plastic over the windshield and this time anchored it down by the doors. I got all my many belongings from the vehicle and went inside. The shop manager had already been cleaning the front entrance and spreading salt, but inside the door the melted snow had formed a nice wet and slippery area he hadn't gotten dried yet. Here was where I removed my boots and slipped on my sneakers. Gathering up my many essentials I clocked in and made my way to the department I worked in.

When I walked across the floor I saw the manager of another department turning on the lights, one co-worker and me..soon after my arrival my manager arrived. That made three of us in our department, three out of nearly twenty people made it in. In the entire plant there was maybe twenty of us worker ants that arrived.

During the day I would sneak peaks out the door when I took my breaks. Snow was falling through-out the day. I wanted out in it with my camera...first I had to make it through the day at work. When 4pm and quitting time finally arrived I began to gather up my belongings once again and head out. I knew that the co-worker that I had rescued that morning was riding with someone with a bigger truck that was going to pull his truck out of the snow. That meant all I had to do was go home. Which I did in a kinda round about way.

I wish that I had gotten my camera out of the bag before I started off, but I didn't, so I missed a few good shots. (Story of my life) Finally at one point I did pull over and get my camera. From the safe place I pulled off I fired off a few shots, walked across the roadway and took a few more. I then returned to my vehicle and made my way to where I could turn to go past a pond. When I got in front of it I fired off a few more shots, then pulled up to where I could turn around. Once I got turned around I went home. Slowly and carefully.

When I got all of my belongings into the house I made ready to go walking. I was going out to get photos of the snow before it got dark. Of course everyone had to call me right at that moment to see if I had made it home....

to be cont..

She (tears of loss)

She sat at the table holding the letter. She knew that handwriting well. It was a letter from her mom. She loved those letters as they kept her up with all that was going on so very far away. Even as they brought a few tears of loneliness and despair. This isn't what she had dreamed of.

Picking the smoldering cigarette up from the ashtray she took a long drag. Feeling the burn she exhaled slowly. Grey blue smoke filled the air around her head burning her eyes. Snubbing the cigarette out she tore open the letter. She loved that her mother wrote out every detail of what her family was up to. She had always been so close to her family in all ways. They had always helped and supported each other. She wondered how they would act if they knew what she had gotten herself into. Carefully she refolded the letter and returned it to its envelope. Standing she carried the letter to the other room where the box waited. Placing the letter on top of the others she closed the lid. She knew she would return to read this again, several times. For now, it was safe.

Closing the door behind her she crossed the living room of the trailer they were currently inhabiting. It wasn't a bad mobile home. It had been well maintained. The neighborhood wasn't bad. The lady that owned the place was very friendly but made it a point that her property was to be respected. She liked that in a person. She watched as her small mixed breed dog danced at her feet. Precious wanted to go out and play. She had never really cared for small dogs but this one was special. Opening the door she walked out with the dog. Sitting down on the front step she lit another cigarette as she sat watching. Precious ran around in circles, chased a rogue leaf and pounced on passing bugs. Her longish coat blowing about her as she ran, the white color of her coat almost blinding in its purity. She knew that no matter how long this dog played out here she wouldn't get dirty. Precious was just too prissy for that. It was funny how She had come about getting this dog. A relative that was anger at her had a dog that had the litter of pups that Precious came out of. She was trying to find them homes but was having no luck. A mutual friend got Precious and presented the pup to She as a gift. It was love at first sight. Precious was all the things a pet should be. Finishing the cigarette she flipped it out into the gravel drive and called to the dog. She smiled as the young dog ran across the grass and jumped up into her lap. This was unconditional love. This was the pup that let her know when it was bedtime. This was the friend who snuggled close when emotions ran high. This was the friend who was here, always nearby when She was at her most lonely. Hugging the pup close She smiled. Standing up holding the dog She turned and entered the mobile home.

After her bath Precious curled up in the corner of the couch to sleep. She shook her head and moved to finish cleaning the kitchen, a chore she had started before the mail had been delivered. At the sound of footsteps she cringed but kept her hands in the dishwater. It hid their trembling. She listened as he crossed the room, stopping at the table where his hard hat, lunch and extra pack of cigarettes rested. He didn't say much as he picked them up and turned to go. She wondered how long he would work this job before something happened. He seemed impressively good at managing to get injured. She kept her eyes to the dishes as he left, relaxing only when she heard the door close. Finishing the kitchen She hung the dishtowel to dry. Reaching out she tapped a cigarette from the pack and lit it. Inhaling the toxic smoke she felt the sting, exhaling she crossed the room to where her few remaining drawing pencils and sketch pad rested. As She passed she glanced toward the couch, Precious wasn't there. Calling the dog She waited to hear her slight footsteps sounding through the mobile home. When the dog didn't come She grew worried. Opening the door She searched the yard. Calling to the dog, first expectantly then fearfully. Jumping the outside steps She began to search the mobile home park. Around the trailers, around the retaining pond, under the steps of the apartments, calling the dog frantically.

Hurrying across the drive She walked up the entrance road to the main road. She ignored the heavy traffic as she walked along the roadway, going nearly into the small town they lived near. Crossing the road She began her walk back. Still calling the dog as she walked, fear becoming dread. She was almost back to the entrance road when she saw her. Precious lay crumpled at the side of the road. The pup had followed Him out, chasing after him wanting to play. Now Precious lay dead. She hadn't cried in a long time, seeing her friend dead broke the dam that held them back. Slowly and carefully She picked up the broken body. There were no wounds, no blood or broken bones protruding. It must have been a glancing blow, but one that killed her none the less. Precious had depended on her to keep her safe, and She had failed. Holding the body close She stood and walked the remaining way back. Tears flowing unchecked. He would have to bury Precious when he returned, She would not be able to do this..
