Cancer touches us all

Many of us have lost someone that we love to cancer. Some more recently than others, some of these we may have been related to, were friends with, worked with. It doesn't matter how well we knew them or how close we were to them. It doesn't matter the cancer battle they fought- and lost. They have left us, they battle no more. We are here to deal with their loss, and the empty spot they have left.







There are those that have battled cancer, no matter they type, and have won that battle. Even those that have gone into the fight more than once. At this moment, they are with us. I am one of those. I am a survivor- as are those that have battled and are currently battling cancer.







We go into this fight, believing we can win. More than ever before- many of us now do win this, but not all.







We go into this fight, with the love, the prayers, the help of those that know and love us.







It is not an easy battle, no matter how early or late the cancer was diagnosed. It is not an easy battle no matter the treatments undergone.







We hear the diagnoses, and then we must decide who we are going to share the information with. We share that diagnoses with those that are closest to us alone, or with whomever else we chose, small or large numbers. We may ask for prayer, assistance or we may try to do this on our own. For our own reasons.







I remember, I will always remember the expression on my brother's face when he found out. It is ingrained in my memory never to be erased. That is one of the reasons I do the things I do in this battle. My cancer physically is gone. I was diagnosed, I had a lumpectomy and radiation. I am a survivor. But---I am forever changed. Many things in this life change us, for the better or worse.







My cancer has made me stronger than I ever was. My diet has changed, my activity levels have changed, my very thought processes...have changed. I find peace in my faith and in the simple things around me. I am more content in what I have, not seeking out the many material things because realization is, they won't keep me healthy, they won't make me happy. They are in fact, simply things. I have become more outspoken at least in this, my story.







While I was fighting my cancer, there were days, especially while I was undergoing the radiation treatments, when I felt as if it was impossible to put one foot in front of the other. I had no energy, I was moving, working, living on will power and faith. Even as tired I was during the day, I still took the time, made the effort to take a daily walk. There I found a great peace and the strength, to keep fighting. Many friends sent me cards (that I still have), many prayed for me, many sent me messages of encouragement. And I fought on.







I won my battle. I am cancer free. There are those- as I said- that do not. We are made less by their loss. Yet, we are made stronger. We look to this and we grow angry. We look to this their loss and we grow determined. We will fight to not lose another loved one, another friend, another co-worker- another friend of a friend of a friend to cancer. We grow determined that our best friend's mother, sister, father, brother will not lose his battle.







I do this by writing about it. By telling my story, by sharing what I dealt with, what I did, how far I have come. I do this, by my writing, and simply talking with those somewhere in the battle. I do this, by participating in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. I stay the entire night. I stay for those who have battled and won. I stay for those who have battled and lost. I stay for myself. I walk the Survivor lap and I walk the very last Celebratory lap. I watch the sun go down, the luminaries being lit and I watch the sun come up. It is my wish, my desire, my hope..to see an end to cancer. Part of that we can bring about in lifestyle changes, part of that will need those that work to discover a cure. But they need funding, that is where Relay for Life comes in. There are many ways to support Relay for Life- ask me, check in with your local chapter, as someone you know that is involved. Cancer is a terrible disease that shows no favor. It takes whomever it chooses. Let us, together, put an end to it. Let us work so that more of those that face cancer will celebrate more birthdays- healthy and cancer free.

a light for You

In gentleness You walked

teach me

how to follow Your example

give to me a gentle spirit

soft spoken in all things

not in meekness may I walk

in Your ways, give me strength

of purpose, of will, of faith,

in You and You alone

In compassion, You reached out

healing those with sickness

chasing away the demons of the soul

giving hope, giving peace

renewed strength to walk

following You

give to me knowledge and wisdom,

teach me how to follow Your example

In tenderness, You touched

the lives of all that came to You

the widows, the children,

those that were poor or sick

You reached out in healing and blessing

Your love evident in all You said and did

a tender touch, as Yours

when You were here, physically among us

teach me, so I will do as You would have me

that I would be, an example of You

In love, Lord Jesus, You walked this place

All in Lord, how I seek to be all in

as I walk with You

I know that there will be those

who do not understand

seeking, ever seeking to criticize

their eyes closed, their ears sealed

they do not understand

this walk with You

the relationship that You offer us

that You seek with us

contentious to some, for they do not understand

cannot comprehend

the love You offer, the peace You give

all in Lord, I seek to be all in

as I walk with You

along this way, this path narrow

strewn with the rocks of malice from those

along the way, determined to bring strife

Their taunts ugly, their words hurtful

intentionally

for they do not see You, they cannot with cold heart

understand Your gift of love

they stand along the way, hiding in the darkness

afraid for their sins to be seen in Your light

lurking in the shadows, they wait

seeking only to bring pain

share the darkness in which they hide

it is all they know, they know not Your peace

so they seek to prevent, seek to damage

the life I seek

one of being all in my Lord

all in with You

that I may with You, walk this path assured

strong and blest in You

that I may walk, with open eyes and ready words to share

of Your love, Your most merciful grace

that I may share Your gospel

to all that will hear

planting a seed Lord, for You

hoping to give others Lord, hope

reason to seek You, seek Your love

all in Lord, all in with You

is what I seek

as I walk this path, listening to You

speak to me,

as I follow You Lord, along this way

allowing You to guide me, gird me in Your love

wrap me in Your peace

fill me, with understanding of You Lord, of You

as I seek, always seek

to be all in Lord

Help me Lord, to remember what's important

not to never to allow, my own thoughts and worries

to consume me, to overcome and over shadow

what is really important, Your children

those around me that are suffering and weary

let me see them Lord, recognize their need

give me wisdom in You Lord, to share

give me strength to reach out and lift up

helping those that are among us, that are in need

You were here among us

You walked the dusty roads, reaching out

to all that You passed,

teaching, explaining, healing

You saw not only to the emotional needs

but to the physical as well

Your love, so great

Your love, enough

Help me Lord, to remember

that as I make this journey to You

walking along with You with me

that I take the time, that I open my eyes

to see those that You have placed in my path

that I may reach out to them, lift them

from where they have stumbled

share with them, the news of You

reaching out in a way that You would

acknowledging, You. How You care for all

and all that is needed by those suffering

Speak to me, let me hear and recognize Your voice

understanding what You would have me do

go where You would have me go

living a life, that glorifies You in all ways

Help me Lord

to remember

it isn't about me

my wants, my needs, my concerns

it is about You Lord

all about You

and Your gracious

When my mind is empty of thought

seeking the words to say

You are my strength

You know Lord, the pain

that flows in my wounded heart

You know

and I know, You understand

the tears that fall, unabated

down reddened cheeks

the sobs held within

silent the pain

but You know, and You understand

when I come to You, yet again

pleading for strength to endure

I feel You move within my heart

Your strength is what I need

to walk through this rain of sorrow

I know, that the evil one knows our weakness

knows where to strike

in the hope of drawing us from You

weakening the bonds of our relationship with You

understanding that Lord, I seek You

making You the foundation of my strength

the rock on which I stand

as I kneel here before You Lord

lifting arms of supplication and pleading

fill me, I ask, with Your strength

for Your strength is more

Your strength is greater

than any storm

light my way to Your peace

lighten this burden to a level less intense

I carry my cross Lord for You

every where that I travel

this storm that is the thorn in my side

I bear as I can

even as I ask, give me strength

to bear it better, to endure without comment

so that others will not wonder

of my faith, for it is strong in You

I know, that You know my storms

I know, that You understand my pain

the tears that fall from the wounded heart

I hand it all to You Lord

pass it on to You

for no storm can match Your power

no storm can withstand Your strength

You are an awesome God

Almighty and powerful

I hand the storms to You Lord God

asking only, for Your strength

and Your wisdom

for the peace that comes from You

for the next storm that comes

for I know it will come

it is my weakness

You are my strength
